Designated Naval Aviator

About two and a half years ago Kevin began his aviation journey in Pensacola, Florida. He has spent countless hours learning to fly the Piper Cherokee 140, T-6B Texan II, TH-57B/C Jet Ranger, and the TC-12B Huron (I definitely got help with those names from Kevin!). At times (for both of us) it seemed to stretch on forever! Flights were constantly delayed or canceled in Florida due to the relentless thunderstorms in the summer, yet once we got to Texas, it felt like time had sped up. We got to Texas only 6 months ago, and we're yet again about to embark on another move across the country. However, before the students are dispersed throughout the country, they all become designated as Naval Aviators during which ceremonies are held to conclude their long journey. All three of the ceremonies were amazing, symbolic, and emotional at times. Kevin and I felt so lucky to have family in town to celebrate the entire week leading up to his big day, and let me tell you, words cannot express how proud we all are of him! Job well done! 

Blessing of the Wings

The first ceremony of the day is held in the base chapel. Each student signed their name in a book and pinned their gold wings to a tapestry that is hung in the chapel. Every week (until the tapestry is filled), attendees of the chapel pray for the safety of each student.

Soft Patch Winging

The next ceremony of the day is an informal brunch with the command. Family members remove their old patch, and attach the new one with their wings. 

Winging Ceremony 

The final ceremony of the day is the formal winging ceremony. His gold wings that will be worn from this point forward, signify him being an official Naval Aviator. Family members are asked to pin them on and be a part of the important process that got them to where they are today.
